B.ED means Bachelor of education. It is a professional degree course which prepares students for work as a teacher in schools. In India this degree course is offered for those who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching.
The right to free and compulsory education for children (R.T.E-2009) between 6 and 14 in India comes into force from April 2010. The act emphasize on quality education for every child. So with the view to bring about quality education in schools it is required that the B.ED degree as qualification of a teacher will be mandatory.
For entry in B.ED course the required minimum qualification is candidate with at least 50% marks either in the bachelor’s degree or in the master’s degree in Science/Humanities/Social science, Bachelor in Engineering or Technology with specialization in Science and Mathematics with 55% marks or any other equivalent qualification.
The relaxation of marks for SC/ST/PWD is 5%.

In west Bengal B.ED course is also offered in distance mode by –
1) Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
2) Burdwan University
3) Netaji Subhas University (in ODL- Open Distance Learning, mode for untrained school teacher)
The duration of the course is two years from 2015.
B.ED course is regulated by N.C.T.E.(National Council for Teacher Education). The National Council for Teacher Education is the statutory body of Teacher Training courses in India.
